About the Team

The BYC Race Team is for sailors looking to take that next step into competitive racing. The Race Team consists of the Opti Race Team and the Advanced Race Team. The race team practices and races during the summer out of the Bellingham Yacht Club on Bellingham Bay. The team travels to regattas around the northwest and country competing in high performance races.

One of the goals of the Advanced Race Team will be to encourage competitive sailors to race multiple types of sailboats. The BYC is committed to this goal by providing FJs, Lasers, 29ers, J24s, and Etchells for Advanced Race Team Practices.

Practice Days

Summer practice are held every Monday and Thursday starting June 26 running through August 17. Practice times vary by boat type as follows:

  • Laser and 29er – 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m (be there at 11:30 a.m. to rig boats and warm up)
  • Opti and FJ – 4:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m (be there at 4:00 p.m. to rig boats and warm up)

Sailors

All sailors are welcome to be on the BYC Race Team provided they have completed at least two weeks of Learn-to-Sail class at either the WWU Lakewood Facility or Bellingham Yacht Club.

Cost

We have restructured our team memberships this year to provide a variety of levels of membership as well as a special Opti Camp and separate early season Laser and 29er Team Practices .  Click here to view the different levels and pricing options.

Scholarships

We realize that sailing is not the least expensive sport in which to participate. Scholarships are available to those who qualify by being on the Free-Reduced Lunch Program through the schools. Please contact us if you qualify and pass this information to anyone who may be interested. We don’t want to turn anyone away from the sport because of financial burdens, so please let us know if you need help financially.

Required Gear

GearWe require all race team sailors (Opti Team and Advanced Team) to have a Type III Coastguard approved lifejacket, a whistle on their life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days when we will require a wetsuit or you won’t be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties, and no cotton. West Coast Sailing offers high school students 15% off gear, and free shipping. If you are unsure as which style/type or brands of gear to chose, please ask us what gear we recommend. For more information on what gear to get, visit our Gear Page.

Typical Opti and FJ Team Practice:

Sailors are expected to show up at 4:00 p.m. dressed and ready to sail. We will rig boats and at 4:30 there will be an on-land chalk talk and then we will head out on the water for practice. We will return to the dock at 6:40 to debrief and de-rig, with practice ending at 7:00. Sailors are expected to bring their own gear/PFDs for practice. Wet suits are required. Please make sure sailors are fed before practice and that they have a water bottle available during sailing. Please check the weather before practice to insure proper clothing.
